Makeup Brushes

While putting on makeup can be fun, it can also be a little overwhelming thinking about all the different type of brushes involved.

Here are some of the basics involved.

Sponges. There are 2 different types, your drugstore variety that comes in different shapes and sizes. These are disposable and usually latex free. There is also the original beautyblender, which comes recommended by many makeup artist. To use, simply run it under water to get it soft, using the larger side to blend in.

(There are many different brands of brushes that also vary in size, shape, etc., but I’ll be talking about MAKE UP FOREVER)

After you apply foundation, you might want to use a powder to set your makeup. This will help throughout the day (or night) keep it in place. These brushes come in various large and medium shapes.

Next step is your eyes; you want to do them instead of your cheeks because any loose product that falls can be swept away with a brush.

A medium size shadow brush will apply colour evenly.
Medium Shader Brush

A medium rounded brush (also known as precision brush) will help when smudging along the lash line and crease when doing smoky eye.
Medium Precision Blender Brush

A large blender brush will help when blending, or applying colour.

An angled eyebrow brush is stiff, and can be used for eyebrows, or applying gel eyeliner.

A lip brush is generally used for lipsticks, for when makeup artists are working on clients. This is a sanitary way to apply colour and can be more precise. They are also good when red lipstick is worn (or any darker shade), as you can clean around the lip area with foundation.

A blush brush which comes with a slightly pointed tip like this, rounded or angled tip are used for powder. They can also be used for applying highlighter or bronzer.

These are the basic brushes you’d need for applying makeup. Natural bristles are always better as they last longer, but are pricer. Remember you don't need to spend a lot of money for good brushes, but the better quality will last you longer. Always remember to clean your brushes at least once a week and when travelling, you want to keep them in a cosmetic bag designed for them to reduce damage to bristles.

If you're ever not sure about what type of brush to get, go to a cosmetic store where brushes are sold and simply ask for help. It can be a little overwhelming deciding on what types to buy, so knowing the specifics is always good.
